African Forest Elephant
The African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is a smaller, more elusive cousin of the savanna elephant, found in the dense rainforests of Central and West Africa. Recognised by its straighter tusks and rounded ears, this species is a vital “gardener of the forest”, dispersing seeds over vast distances and maintaining the health and diversity of tropical ecosystems.
Sadly, forest elephants are among the most threatened mammals on the planet, suffering dramatic population declines due to ivory poaching and habitat fragmentation. Their remote habitats make monitoring and protection especially challenging, yet also highlight the importance of innovative conservation strategies.
