Feeding Ecology
African bush elephants are highly selective feeders. Rather than consuming vegetation at random, they choose specific plant species, parts, and growth stages that provide the highest nutritional value. Their preferences shift with seasonal availability, tender grasses and fresh leaves during the wet season, and bark, roots, and woody browse when food becomes scarce. This selectivity helps elephants meet their enormous daily energy requirements while also shaping the structure and composition of their ecosystems.
